How We Met as written by Brandon
Certain moments in your life are frozen in time, and you can recall them effortlessly when you close your eyes. One of those for me is the first time I saw Rosemarie. I swung by her dorm room because I had recently met her roommate. She was reclined on her chair at her desk with her feet propped up, hair pulled back and wearing a hoodie. We barely spoke, a simple hello and introduction. Our roommates were dating, and we quickly became friends. I knew from the beginning (and so did all our friends) that she was the girl for me. I would make up excuses to see her. We were friends for almost a year. Our first date set up the rest of our lives. I had written a song and with a music major friend’s help, I serenaded her on that first date. We got engaged a year later, and were married in
2005 right before we began student teaching.
I am so incredibly thankful for the amazing husband God has blessed me with. Brandon is a loving father, a caring husband, and my best friend. Brandon is funny, compassionate, patient, supportive, and determined. He is a real leader and knows when someone needs encouragement or assistance and is right there to lend a hand. Brandon is the director of a growing high school band. Students love him, he is constantly being nominated by students as a mentor teacher and even for faculty homecoming court ;-). He shows kids how important they are, to develop a strong work ethic, and take pride in their accomplishments. Not only is he a fun and passionate teacher, but also an amazing father to our son Logan. The two of them are always trying to make new foods and try new recipes for me to try. I have to admit they don’t all turn out well, but it’s pretty adorable. Brandon and Logan dress up and play superheros around the house and build fantastic Lego creations. When we are around family, Brandon is the first one to a have a baby niece or nephew in his arms.
I give thanks every day for the gift of my wonderful wife God has given me. Rosemarie is my partner in life. She is strong where I am not and I am so thankful for the life that we have built together over the last 10 years. She is
always learning and growing, becoming even more beautiful inside and out. She is thoughtful, kind, and creative. She is always coming up with fun and crafty ideas at holidays. She is incredibly passionate.
Rose cares deeply and is always ready to act or to show a friend just what caring and compassion are all about. I know this is true, watching her be a mother to our son and a teacher to every 6th grader in town. She lovingly
corrects and cares for Logan. She plans fun learning in her science classroom and her instruction teaches kids to love science. I’ve seen her influence in my life as well. She has made me more thoughtful as well as a better leader in our home and in the community.
Logan is 6 years old and loves superheroes, picnics, fire pits, (well, s’mores mostly) and playing games. His favorites right now are Star Wars Trouble and Battleship. He has also taken a new interest in soccer as the city soccer fields are in our backyard. He also fell in love with flying kites at a recent kite festival.
In October of 2015, Logan was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. However, he doesn’t allow this challenge to stop him. He loves to run around the house with our dog, Rusty. He knows his muscles aren’t as strong as his classmates, but he still participates with them in everything they do.
There are many traditions that our family looks forward to year round. Independence Day in is an incredible celebration in our town with carnival, parade, and fireworks. Brandon’s marching band is in the parade every year. On Labor Day we always accomplish a major project, from painting rooms in the house to building a retaining wall
in the backyard. On Thanksgiving, Brandon always makes the turkey. He has perfected the bacon wrapped butter turkey.
We are also huge Christmas fans. As soon as Thanksgiving dinner is over, we are setting up the Christmas tree, regardless of whose house we’re at! Rose carries on her father’s tradition of assembling the lighted harvest and Christmas villages.
In our down time, we enjoy homemade popcorn and movies together. We’ve even made a few of our own starring Logan as any number of superheroes. We enjoy picnics at the beach, playing any new game that friends bring over or that we find ourselves, and baseball: specifically the Minnesota Twins. Logan has begun a love of science and we have fun doing science experiments at home. Music is a passion of ours and a big part of our lives as well.
Our home is a 2300 square foot 2 story house. It has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths with the capability to be 5 bedrooms if needed. We live near two beaches, a new dog park, and the elementary school is only one block away. Our back yard is up against city land that is used for soccer fields, flag football fields, a great walking path, and a new disc golf course. We love working on our house. We’ve built a new retaining wall, fire pit, and our next project is a new deck.
Our faith in Jesus is more than a Sunday morning routine. We seek to live it out in everything we do. We are very involved in our church, serving on the worship team (Brandon plays drums, Rose sings) and helping out in other ways when we are able. We lead a small group in our home on Sunday nights with other people our age. We learn, grow, and encourage each other in that time.
We’ve had the incredible opportunity to teach our faith when we taught at a Christian school for seven years. In that time Brandon led a worship band and Rose taught many grades of bible class. We have prayed for and with our kids and have seen God work in amazing ways as a result. We teach that service and knowledge of God to our son as well.
In the last two years our faith has been challenged as we lost a baby in the 2nd trimester. Shortly after this, we got Logan’s diagnosis of DMD, a disease with no cure. We then discovered that Rose is a carrier of this disease. These events happening so close together led us to prayer and where we discovered God leading us to adoption.
